It makes perfect sense for an individual to have brand loyalty with regards to their favorite company, clothing apparel or professional team through a logo. Certainly, it makes sense for one to have that same sense of loyalty towards their alma-meter through their logo.
Just recently, the University of Massachusetts made a change to its logo after 10 years. There is prestige to be found in any institution’s athletic program. However, there is no doubt that it exists in a program that has alumni such as Victor Cruz, Marcus Camby, and the great Julius Erving. There have been quite a few changes to the school’s logo since 1985.
From 1985 to 1992, the school’s first logo features an old-style letter "U" colored in red. In addition, there was a silver banner draped across the middle of the letter "U." The word “Massachusetts” is written in red across the silver-colored banner. Its font provided the logo with a simplistic and potent feel.
In 1993, the school made a drastic change to its logo and shorted it to the phrase “UMASS”. However, the logo had two different fonts altogether.
The word “U” has a large italicized font that gave the logo of pizazz. The “MASS” part of the word is in a bold and bubble-styled font. The color of both the italicized “U” and the bold “MASS” is colored in dark red and has a tiny white outline along with the whole logo. The logo remained in existence for nine years.
From 2003 - 2011, the logo underwent a significant change. The “UMASS” logo was a bold font that was dark red with a white outline just like its predecessor. There were two major differences. The bottom of the logo has the school’s nickname “MINUTEMEN” in a white font with a black background. The top of the logo has an animated minuteman with a red hat and a gun strapped to his back.
In 2012, the institution adopted a logo that had a big letter “U” with the word “MASS” across it. This logo has quite a few colors. The “U” is partly white and it also contains a grey highlight. The “U” also contains a black and red outline.
The word “MASS” is colored red and has a white background and a small back outline.
Earlier this year, the Massachusetts Minutemen modified their logo to make it stand out even more. Just like its predecessor, the logo consists of the “U” with the word “MASS” placed in front of it. The fonts are the same as the predecessor. However, one major change is that the “U” is colored red as opposed to the prior color of white and grey. The “U” has a white and black outline.
Overall, the number of colors in the “U” was reduced from five to three. Yet, the color scheme of the “U” gives it a certain distinction and flair that could not be found in its predecessor.
The word “MASS” now has been changed to white as opposed to the prior color of red. The logo now has a red and black outline. The “MASS”s new color scheme also brings more attention to the logo and serves to give it more flair.
