The Southeast Missouri State Redhawks have had an illustrious history since their first conference membership back in 1902. They have spent most of their school’s history in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association from 1924 all the way until 1990 but in 1991, the school took a step up and began competing in the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I-AA, better know as the FCS.
The Redhawks have had some good recent success, winning the Ohio Valley conference in football twice since 2010. Southwest Missouri sponsors five men’s sports and eight women’s sports with those sports being basketball, baseball/softball, cross-country, football, and track & field both played by men and women. The women’s only sports consist of soccer, gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball.
The Redhawks have not had an abundance of athletics logo’s throughout school history but they have introduced their third logo iteration to start the new decade in 2020. The original logo had an “SE” in a diamond shape with an arrow running through the middle of the logo. Very basic but a great logo nonetheless. In 2003, the team made the logo a bit more intricate, adding in an actual red hawk with the name of the school and the name of the mascot sitting underneath the big red bird head. Fast forward to 2020 and that bird head isn’t going anywhere but the text that accompanies it will.
The newest interaction of the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks logo continues to include the red hawk head but the text now reads “SEMO,” standing for Southeast Missouri. This abbreviation makes the logo less crowded and brings more attention to the red hawk, which is the main focal point of the logo.
It is a case where less is more and despite shrinking the head of the red hawk, changing the text and making it less wordy helps the red hawk pop and stand out. The Red Hawks look to continue their success into the new decade and they are starting off strong with a brand new look.
