While the classic horseshoe remains the Indianapolis Colts' primary logo, major changes to the overall look of the franchise will be in store for 2020.

The famous Western-style font used to write out the word Colts, which dated back to the franchise's time in Baltimore, is history. In its place is modernized font that is more proportional and not as vertical as the old one that was used for decades.

This font will also be used in the numbers on the uniforms, marking the first major change to the franchise's uniforms since the 1960s.

Indianapolis Colts Wordmark Logo 2020 - Present

The secondary logo is brand new. It starts with a large letter "C" in the new font with the same seven grommets that are in the horseshoe (primary logo). The inside of the letter "C" is carved out to mimic the outline of the state of Indiana, which personalizes a logo for the first time in the franchise's history.

"The Horseshoe remains our most iconic and timeless mark, worn by some of the greatest players in NFL history and loved by some of football's greatest fans, Colts Nation," Colts vice chairman and owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon said. "These new logos – particularly our new Indiana logo – honor our rich history, cement our real and lasting connection to Indiana and embrace the exciting future that lies ahead."

Indianapolis Colts Primary Logo 2002 - Present

The Colts logos became one of the more recognizable symbols in the NFL during the past couple of decades thanks to quarterback Peyton Manning, wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, head coach Tony Dungy, and a host of other Pro Bowlers that won a Super Bowl and played in dozens of classic games in that era.

On the field, the Colts are hoping that the signing of veteran quarterback Philip Rivers will bridge the gap between Andrew Luck's sudden retirement prior to the 2019 season and whoever the long-term quarterback of the future will be.

The franchise was fortunate to go from Peyton Manning right into being able to draft Luck, but his promising future was cut short by injuries that hampered him for a couple of years. He did lead the Colts back to the playoffs in 2018, reaching the divisional round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs. He appeared to be back to his old form, so his retirement announcement during last year's preseason was very unexpected.

The team went with Jacoby Brissett, who got Indy off to a 5-2 start last year before he suffered an injury that derailed the Colts' season, as they missed the playoffs.

Rivers isn't the solution for the franchise's long-term prospects, as the longtime Chargers quarterback was only inked to a one-year contract.
