After dropping the Redskins name in 2020, the NFL team from Washington was branded as the Washington Football Team as a placeholder until a new brand could be developed.
Well, it turns out that the new brand will not be coming until later than many people thought. The team in charge of the rebranding will be taking another year to fully work out the details and give Washington a new identity.
This information came from a statement put out by the Washington Football Team.
“We’ve transitioned from our old name,” that statement read. “Now, it’s time to write a new legacy. The future of Washington Football arrives in 2022.”
The team also has a very public plan in place for a change. All of this information comes from a team-created site known as washingtonjourney.com.
The entire process started in 2020 with the team listening to public feedback and starting to form some plans. Some of the crowdsourcing plans came from veterans who are fans, alumni of the team, and season-ticket holders.
They make it very clear that a lot of research is going into this decision. Because the new brand and name will probably be around for a long time, it is good that a lot of time and dedication are going into the process.
The website says that once the research is complete, the creation and implementation are going to happen. Although there is no hard date for when we should expect anything, they are tentatively planning on kicking off the 2022 season under the new name.
Ever since the announcement of a name change came, the speculation of names and ideas flooded the internet. Because it was such a monumental move, sports fans, in general, were tuned in, not just Washington fans. This is partly why the decision is taking longer than some people thought. The whole world is paying attention.
Another really cool aspect of the team-run website is the “Featured Fan Submissions” section. This section is constantly being updated with some of the best fan submissions in regards to a new name for the team. Some of the submissions at the time of writing this include the Rhinos, Justice, Generals, Red Tails, and many more.
If you want to try your luck at naming the next professional football team in Washington, you can do so on that same website.
You can also sign up for team updates on that same website. This will help keep you in the loop for all of the new developments with the Washington Football Team.
So, there will be one more year to buy your Washington Football Team merchandise to document your fandom in this weird time in history. The new branding is on the horizon and will hit the field eventually, but not next season.
