Liverpool Football Club is built on a rich history and a legacy of success. Since being formed by John Houlding in 1892 and changing from a light blue jersey to the famous red, the Merseyside outfit has established itself as a world-famous institution. Liverpool is synonymous with silverware and dominance, coming together through challenging times of animosity to celebrate their city and, most importantly, their football club.
A city that is as proud of its roots as Liverpool is always going to have great times on the pitch. Through the eras, we have seen the Reds display some of the finest football teams the English game has ever witnessed. Even now, as a new era dawns at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp's departure this summer, there is still unwavering optimism around the place as the club pursues its 20th league title, competing on all fronts domestically and in Europe to add to the Carabao Cup it won in February against Chelsea.
Throughout Liverpool’s 132-year history, the club has undergone plenty of changes. The recent expansion of the Anfield Road entrance increased the ground’s capacity to over 59,000 and saw a record attendance against Manchester City. In contrast, the modern game will see kits released every season. The club has also featured many different logos, each with its nuances to mark distinct eras.
For supporters, each logo represents a time capsule of a bygone era, and with that in mind, let’s look at some of the most iconic Liverpool badges and assess which one stands out the most.
1955 – The Liver bird
Let’s start with Liverpool’s first sustained, successful period after rebranding in 1955. Following years of mediocrity in the second division, culminating in as low as an 11th-place finish, the club began to turn things around with the arrival of the great Bill Shankly. The simple logo represented the Liverbird, a mythical creature that is the symbol of Liverpool. Covered by a simple circle design, the badge stood proudly upon the red shirts as Shankly ruled the roost and oversaw promotion to the old First Division.
His team, which included the likes of Ron Yeats and Billy Lidell, won the title in 1961 and, four years later, defied the odds to win the 1965 FA Cup. Many Scousers believed that the Liver Bird would fly away atop the city center building if the club ever did it.
1968 – The Boot Room Years
Shankly’s success was not a solo operation. When the club altered its badge in 1968, removing the circle and keeping a simple L.F.C. below the logo, the Boot Room became a staple in Anfield’s history.
This is perhaps the most well-known logo in Liverpool’s history as it defines the simplicity on which the club built its most successful era. Indeed, when Shankly left the club and Bob Paisley took over, he ensured things remained the same, and it helped the Reds win three European Cups in four years, as well as a plethora of domestic trophies under the softly spoken Yorkshireman.
Paisley had been associated with the club for years, as had Ronnie Moran and Joe Fagan, who would succeed their Boot Room colleague and help Liverpool become the first team to win the treble against all odds when they beat Roma in the European Cup, now the Champions League. Nowadays, even the best UK betting apps wouldn’t have gone against Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, as they dominated a whole era of British football.
1992 – The ‘Spice Boys’
Liverpool struggled throughout the 1990s and struggled to win trophies as they updated their logo to a more contemporary design. Green and yellow were introduced, as were flames dedicated to the Hillsborough disaster, remembering those who lost their lives at an FA Cup game.
The badge also represented new optimism, and the era will be remembered infamously for the white suits at Wembley. The defeat to Manchester United is still iconic for the entertainment that Roy Evans’ sides would produce on the pitch, probably most for the part they played in Blackburn Rovers winning the Premier League on the season's final day.
1999 – A modern look
The new millennium saw the introduction of Liverpool’s most famous logo, which is still being used today. The Reds kicked off in style with a treble win under the late Gérard Houllier, before defying the odds in Europe with a Steven Gerrard-inspired Champions League win. AC Milan were full to the brim with stars and spearheaded by Kaka, but Rafa Benitez and co came back from the dead to cancel out the Italians’ 3-0 lead and win on penalties in Istanbul.
Everything from the polished look to the updated Liver Bird makes this the most well-known logo. Even when the club’s matchday shirts used a simpler version in 2012, many will remember the sheer number of iconic players who have represented the club since this badge’s inception. From Xabi Alonso to Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez to Mohamed Salah, Liverpool has always managed to hit the nail on the head when it comes to its logo, and that is the mark of one of the best football clubs in the world.
