Michigan is one of the largest American states by land and population. It has a rich sporting heritage and is home to some of the American sports' most famous franchises and sporting dynasties. Before we run through all the logos and which is our favorite, let's break down how many professional teams we have that operate in Professional leagues:
- Pistons
- Lions
- Tigers
- Red Wings
Some may argue that other top teams include the Michigan Wolverines, and while they operate at the highest level of college basketball, they aren't a professional team, so we had to draw the line there.
Michigan hosts some of the top franchises we have seen in American sports. You can find plenty of Michigan sportsbook bonuses that provide a variety of markets for these teams and their respective leagues.
Detroit Tigers
Starting with the Detroit Tigers logo is iconic Detroit. Their logo is internationally recognized as the "D" in the D12 logo, the rap supergroup fronted by Eminem that achieved global stardom in the early 2000s. For sports fans, it represents the Tigers, who have four World Series to their name.
It isn't a bad logo, but we would have ranked it as number four because it is reasonably basic. Although the calligraphy is on point, it doesn't have the same visual impact as other logos containing more vivid imagery. The logo itself has gone through a handful of different revamps since the Detroit Tigers were established in 1894.
The Tigers logo is pretty minimalist compared to other sporting logos from the Great Lake state.
While many fans might be disappointed to see it ranked at the bottom of the four teams we have selected today, we aren't saying we dislike the logo. Its design is less impressive than some other logos we will feature today.
Detroit Pistons
As one of the big names in the NBA, the Pistons have a long history stretching over 80 years. As Michigan's premier basketball team, the Pistons have won multiple championships, the last coming in 2004.
The Pistons logo features a basketball and red and blue font. It gets the point across and has more going on than the Tigers logo, but we will place it second to last in the grand scheme of logos. It's hard thinking outside the box to grab attention. We don't want to anger Pistons fans, but it's not the most colorful or eye-catching logo you'll find in the NBA.
We appreciate now is not a good time for Pistons fans. Despite getting top rookie Cade Cunningham on board, their fortunes haven't taken a turn for the better, and they have struggled again this season. A logo change might inject a welcome transition for the team.
Detroit Lions
Don't worry, citizens of Detroit; this isn't a hit piece on all the logos you can find in Michigan. The Lions logo is esteemed, and we would rank it as a close second. It is the first logo on our list that features a graphic of the team’s name within the imagery.
With a ferocious and regal blue lion as the front and center of the logo, there's no doubting who the logo belongs to and what the team is about. The Lions may not be a team that set the world on fire, but their logo is one of the positives of the franchise. They've changed it over the years, but it has remained unchanged.
Despite never reaching the Superbowl final, the NFL team has one of the most recognizable logos in the league. It is also a much better design than the simplistic features of the first two sports teams.
Detroit Red Wings
Our choice for number one is the Detroit Red Wings. The popularity of the NHL can blow hot and cold in certain American states. However, in countries like Canada, it is an immensely popular game, and this is signaled by the attendance we see for the Canadian teams that compete in the NHL.
With so many professional teams spread across Detroit, fans will choose games based on convenience and preference. The Red Wings remain popular, though, and NHL is much more prevalent in Michigan than in other states.
The Red Wings formed just shy of a century ago and are by far the most successful sporting team we have touched on today. Of course, it can be hard to compare the success of teams and franchises across different sports, but with more Stanley Cups than any other team based in the USA, the Red Wings certainly have a high-quality logo to match a high-quality franchise.
Only two teams have won more Stanley Cups than the Red Wings. Their logo of a wheel with red wings on either side is a fantastic example of how an excellent logo can sell the idea of a franchise. For fans who support NHL internationally, there's no chance of confusing the logo with any other team. The vivid, flaming color scheme is iconic and synonymous with the legendary NHL franchise.
Wrap Up
It can be hard to rank logos, and it can be wildly subjective. In essence, there is no right or wrong answer. It's like somebody asking you to rank your favorite songs. Just because we have ranked them in a specific order today doesn't mean our list is more valid than yours.
Still, we hope we have provided enough information to go alongside our rankings for you to consider whether you need to rethink your list or if there are a few variables we might have missed.
