Here’s a sporting riddle: can a team be both successful and unsuccessful simultaneously?
It’s a question that is particularly intriguing when asked in the context of the Houston Texans, the NFL's ‘youngest’ franchise. Despite being established in 2002, the Texans have reached the AFC divisional playoffs six times… an excellent ratio.
However, the downside is that they have yet to go one better: win that game and qualify for the AFC Championship showdown.
Armed with a new logo – the first time that the design has been tweaked in more than 20 years – as well as an improving roster of players on the pitch, there’s hope for Houston fans that their new look and attitude could finally lead to a deeper run into the post-season shake-up.
Ringing the Changes
The iconic bull design of the original logo remains, but the color palette has been tweaked. The left-hand side of the bull’s face is now ‘deep steel blue,’ a darker shade than before, while the right side has changed to ‘battle red,’ a much brighter and aesthetically pleasing tint.
The Texans have also debuted four new uniforms during the 2024-25 campaign, including new home and away jerseys, an ‘alternate’ kit, plus a ‘color rush’ outfit worn for the first time against the Detroit Lions back in November.
It’s the first time that the franchise’s uniforms have been updated so significantly since 2002. Although team officials were determined to remain faithful to that original vision, introducing a ‘H-Town’ motif reveals their desire to create a closer link between the players and their proud Houston fanbase.

Changes to a logo or a jersey may seem inconsequential on the outside, but such a reset can create renewed ties for everyone associated with the team – it’s a fresh start, both in look and feel.
So far, the results have been encouraging.
Once again, the Texans reached the AFC divisional playoffs at the business end of the campaign, continuing their fine knack for progressing through the postseason. The key now is to take that next step and reach the AFC Championship game… or even the Super Bowl.
Ahead of the 2024-25 season, the Texans were priced at odds of +1600 in the Super Bowl betting market, with only a handful of teams – including the Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, and Philadelphia Eagles – considered to have a stronger chance of lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
They will likely be shorter odds again in 2025-2026, when their new logo and uniforms could finally get a run out on the biggest stage in football.
Keeping It Simple

Interestingly, the low-key changes the Texans made to their logo and uniforms before the season have been matched by the simplicity of their approach on the pitch.
Houston yielded an average of 21.9 points per game during the regular season, surrendering only 315 combined passing and rushing yards per contest. So, head coach DeMeco Ryans and his defensive staff have turned the Texans into a tough team to beat.
So much so, in their Wild Card game, the Los Angeles Chargers could only muster 12 points as the Texans' defense swarmed all over Justin Herbert, forcing a series of mistakes from the quarterback. Houston went on to prevail 32-12.
Their offensive output is not quite as strong, hence why the solidity of their defense has been vital to their success this term, but they do have the individual talent to win games. Young quarterback C.J. Stroud continues to mature – he threw for 3,727 yards during the regular season, while Joe Mixon and Nico Collins delivered 1,000 rushing and receiving yards, respectively.
The Texans, man for man, aren’t as strong as the elite operators in the NFL. However, shrewd coaching, a penchant for doing the basics well, and a happy knack for disrupting their opponents’ offensive plays suggest that Houston has a bright future.
Could the introduction of their new logo coincide with the franchise’s deepest run into the postseason yet?
