Webpixum approached a case study rebrand of the Carolina Panthers. The motivation was to help elevate the existing “Panther”, wordmark, and uniform design, as well as build additional assets that work well with the brand.

The Panthers logo hasn’t changed much in their relatively short history, but I ended up taking a little different approach to this design. Instead of a roaring panther, I made a fierce glaring panther.

There was the notion that the Carolina Panthers logo is based off the outline of the combined borders of the North and South Carolina states. It seems a bit of a stretch (the wikipedia article has since been altered with the factoid removed) but it makes for a good starting point. Really all I wanted to do with the Panthers logo was to spruce it up like every other team whose logo is that of an animal, but the prospect of making the logo in to the shape of the states in a more clearer way made for a good challenge too.
As it turns out, the Carolina states as they are look anything but a Panther’s head but it was surprising how little I really had to change in order to fit it all together. It may not be a complete representation but it made for a good starting point and in the end we still end up with a more ferocious-looking panther.
